Junior Coaches

Our Junior Coaches are an important part of what makes the Mako Sharks so special. These experienced swimmers step into leadership roles to help support our younger athletes both in and out of the water.

Not only do they assist our coaching staff during practices, but they also serve as mentors, role models, and encouragers for new swimmers learning the sport. From helping with technique to offering a friendly smile on deck, our Junior Coaches help create the positive, team-first environment that defines the Mako Sharks.

We are so proud to provide opportunities for our older swimmers to grow as leaders while giving our younger athletes extra support as they build confidence in the pool.

Hi! I’m Emerson Girard and I’m 16 years old. I’m originally from Rhode Island, where I started my swimming career at age 7. I immediately fell in love with the sport and have been swimming ever since.

I currently swim with the Rays and am a member of the Catawba Ridge High School Varsity Swim Team. I’m a state swimmer and a regional title holder in the 500 Freestyle — my favorite event!

I’m so excited to be returning for my second year with the Mako Sharks coaching staff and look forward to continuing to help younger swimmers grow their skills and love for the sport.

Asher Craig Junior Coach

Asher is excited to join the Massey Mako Sharks coaching staff this summer! Swimming has been a huge part of his life from a young age, and he loves the energy, friendships, and sense of teamwork that come from being part of a swim team.

Talia Santos Junior Coach

Talia Santos tried swimming for the first time last summer with the Massey Makos. Always an athlete, she quickly found her stride in the sport and fell in love with competitive swimming.

She earned a spot on the Catawba Ridge High School swim team and attended the State Championships as an alternate. Talia loved swimming so much that she decided to continue her journey year-round with the Rays.

One of her favorite memories from the Makos’ inaugural season was spending time with the younger swimmers and sharing her love for the water, competition, and fun.

Talia is excited to get to know the new swimmers and reconnect with returning ones. She can’t wait to spend long days at the pool helping the Massey Makos have fun and score big this summer!

Emily Thomson Junior Coach

Hi, my name is Emily Thomson and I’m 14 years old. I wanted to become a junior coach because I love working with kids and helping them experience the same joy that I feel when I’m swimming on a team.

I started swimming around age 10 at the YMCA and have continued ever since. Last year, I was also a member of the Catawba Ridge High School swim team, which helped me grow even more as a swimmer.

Becoming a junior coach means so much to me, especially because my little sister is on the swim team. I know how confusing things can feel when you’re first starting, and I wanted to be able to help support swimmers like her. Having extra coaches on deck can make such a big difference, and I’m excited to be part of that for our team!
