2026 Volunteer Program

Massey Mako Sharks

The Massey Mako Sharks is a community-run swim team, and parent volunteers are essential to ensuring our swim meets and team events run safely, smoothly, and on time.

For the 2026 season, we are using a Volunteer Points System to fairly distribute responsibilities and provide flexibility in how families meet their requirement.

Volunteer Requirement

Each family is required to earn a minimum of 6 volunteer points during the 2026 season.

Points may be earned through:

• Meet-day volunteer roles
• Team events & socials
• Committee & leadership positions

Additional Notes:

• Roles vary in time commitment, training required, and responsibility
• Point values are clearly listed during sign-ups
• All roles are essential to successful meet operations

Important:
The Mock Meet is used for swimmer and volunteer training and does not earn volunteer points.

Home vs. Away Meet Volunteering

We recognize that volunteering at away meets requires additional travel, time, and coordination for families.

To help offset that commitment:

➡️ This provides flexibility for families who choose to support the team on the road

We greatly appreciate families who step up to help at away meets — your support ensures our swimmers can compete successfully each week.

Meet-Day Volunteer Roles

Unless otherwise noted, roles may be available at both home and away meets. Some positions are home-meet only due to equipment, facility setup, or host-team management.

⏱️ Timing Roles

Timer

• Home Meets: 0.5 (half-meet shift)
• Away Meets: 1.0 (half-meet shift)
  Times swimmers in an assigned lane using a stopwatch. Training provided. Great first-time volunteer role.

Head Timer (Home Meets Only)

• Points: 1.0 (full meet)
  Oversees timers, distributes watches, and provides backup timing.

Backup Timer (Home Meets Only)

• Points: 1.0 (full meet)
  Assists the Head Timer with floating timing support.

🏊 Swimmer Organization

Clerk of Course (Home Only)

• Points: 1.0
  Organizes swimmers into heats and lanes and ensures they arrive behind the blocks on time.

Assistant Clerk of Course

• Home: 0.5
• Away: 1.5
  Supports swimmer staging and lineup organization.

Tent Parent (Ready Bench)

• Home: 0.5
• Away: 1.0
  Supervises swimmers in age-group tents and ensures they report on time.

This is a critical role for meet flow and swimmer safety.

Runner (Home Only)

• Points: 0.5
  Delivers timing sheets and DQ slips to scoring.

Heat Winner Runner (Home Only)

• Points: 0.5
  Distributes heat-winner ribbons and prizes.

Volunteer Backup

• Points: 1.0
  Flexible fill-in role supporting areas of greatest need.

💻 Scoring & Awards

Head Scorekeeper / Computer (Home Only)

• Points: 1.0
  Manages meet software, timing entry, and results.

Assistant Scorekeeper

• Away Meets: 1.0 (half shift)

Ribbon Writer

• Home: 0.5
• Away: 1.0
  Prints labels and prepares ribbons for distribution.

Ribbon Runner (Home Only)

• Points: 0.5
  Hands out ribbons and awards during the meet.

🎧 Announcing & Meet Energy

Meet Announcer / DJ (Home Only)

• Points: 1.0
  Handles announcements, music, and event flow.

Judging & Certified Roles

Stroke & Turn Official

• Home: 2.0
• Away: 2.5
  League certification required.

Head Official / Starter

• Points: 2.0
  Certified league position overseeing race starts and officiating.

Assistant Head Official (Away Only)

• Points: 1.5

Nurse / First Aid (Home Only)

• Points: 2.0
  Medical background preferred. Provides swimmer care.

Setup, Hospitality & Facility Roles

(Home Meets Unless Noted)

Setup Crew

• Home: 0.5
• Away: 0.5
  Arrives early to set up tents, tables, and equipment.

Breakdown Crew

• Points: 0.5
  Post-meet cleanup and pack-up.

Parking Team

• Points: 0.5
  Directs traffic and manages parking flow pre-meet.

Hospitality Coordinator

• Points: 1.0
  Provides snacks and drinks for volunteers and coaches.

Tech Support / AV Helper

• Points: 1.0
  Supports timing systems, speakers, and electronics.

Concessions

Concessions Manager

• Points: 6.0 (Season Long)
  Fulfills full volunteer requirement.

Concessions Workers

• Points: 0.5 per shift

Committee Leads

• Points: 6.0
